The Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta, April 19-24, is one of the worlds premier classic yachting events that brings a fantastic collection of boats and people together in the ideal sailing conditions of the [Caribbean](Location:26). For yacht charter clients, the event provides a unique opportunity to crew on a racing yacht, or luxuriate on a spectator yacht in the midst of all the action.
The race originated back in the 60’s, when classic yachts, gathered in English Harbor Antigua, first began to do charters and the captains and crews challenged each other to a race down to Guadeloupe and back to celebrate the end of the charter season.
By 1987, new yachts largely replaced classic yacht competitors in the Regatta. However, participation was revitalized in 1991 when Elizabeth Meyer brought her newly refitted Endeavour, and Baron Edmond Rothschild brought his 6-meter “Spirit of St Kitts”, and the sponsored Concours d’ Elegance was inaugurated. After a few years, Boat International Magazine took over sponsorship of the Concours d’ Elegance publishing features that brought worldwide recognition to the event. In 1996 the “Spirit of Tradition Class” was introduced, giving new yachts built along classic lines the chance to sail with their original sisterships.
Today the event attracts between 50 and 60 yachts including traditional island craft, classic ketches, sloops, schooners, and yawls, along with the spectacular Spirit of Tradition yachts, J Class yachts, and Tall Ships, resulting in a sensational spectacle of sail, in the ideal trade wind sailing conditions of the Caribbean.
Antigua is a very popular yacht charter destination for the magnificent sailing, legendary Antiguan hospitality, plenty of rum, sunshine, and great camaraderie, in a friendly relaxed atmosphere. All of this places the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta in a destination class of it’s own.
