Sipadan Island, Malaysia

The sole oceanic island in Malaysia, Sipadan is located just off the eastern coast of the island of Borneo that is actually divided between three states, one of them being Malaysia. Sipadan has evolved in a very distinct manner, it was formed by living corals developing on top of extinct volcanic cone, which took thousands of years to develop. As part of one of the richest marine ecosystems in the world, Sipadan is an emerald green gem lined with powdery white beaches whose waters are a natural habitat for such exotic species as green turtles, hawksbill turtle, barracuda, parrotfish, manta rays, eagles rays as well as whale sharks. The island rests immaculate after all of the hotels on Sipadan were closed in 2005 in order to protect the region’s distinct flora and fauna.

One of the island’s principal dive attractions is the Turtle Cave lying underneath the column of the island formed by an underwater limestone cave that is carpeted with a maze of tunnels containing skeletons of turtles that often become lost and drown before reaching the surface. Barracuda Point is another marvelous vista because it is home to the greatest number of schools of barracuda in the world.
