2012 Palm Beach International Boat Show Review: More People, More Merchandise, More Superyachts

The 2012 Palm Beach International Boat Show is being hailed as a success and a sure sign of a general upswing in the economy. With increased traffic and positive sales results, it appears that people are poised to fully express their passions for yachting.

This year attendance was up at the show, which attracted more than 50,000 people. It covered more space than ever, thanks to the addition of 40 in-water slips at Palm Harbor Marina at the show’s north end.

Foyer, DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER

More than $350 million worth of marine merchandise was on display, and the number of yachts with an LOA greater than 100 feet was up 35 percent from last year, distinguishing this show as one of the top in the country. Sunreef Yachts Charter experts toured many of the most distinguished charter yachts, including DIAMOND GIRL, PRIVATE LIVES, BLIND DATE, took copious notes, interviewed Captains and crews and sampled gourmet cuisine on board.

Although it is difficult to estimate exactly how lucrative the show will ultimately prove to be, many sales brokers claim pending sales and the rumor mill is hinting about the sale of

Toys, PRIVATE LIVES

one megayacht considered to be a real gem. Serious charter inquiries from qualified clients, including well known celebrities spotted on the docks, indicate that the future of the marine industry looks very bright indeed.

Please visit Sunreef Yachts Charter Facebook page to view photo albums with additional descriptions of DIAMOND GIRL, PRIVATE LIVESBLIND DATE, GLAZE, FOUR ACES and MISS ROSE, some of our favorite and most popular charter yachts in the show.

Sunreef On Board Benetti Yachts 200′ Bejeweled Masterpiece, DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER

DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER, Owner John Staluppi’s latest, most technologically advanced and extravagantly decorated megayacht, was the must-see build for everyone attending the 2012 Palm Beach International Boat Show. DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER is an outstanding collaboration between John Staluppi, Benetti Yachts, and Evan K. Marshall. Her elegant aesthetics are a stunning interpretation of the exclusivity of luxury yachting, defined by graceful shapes, dynamic lines and a powerful presence.

The in-house technical department of Azimut-Benetti, responsible for naval architecture and engineering, used high-resistance steel for the hull and light weight aluminum alloy for the superstructure. The displacement hull features a bulbous bow and a longitudinal skeg running from amidships to the stern, facilitating the 200-foot yacht’s ability to travel at a remarkable maximum speed of 16 knots, with an oceanic range of 4,800 nautical miles at 12 knots.

The concept design and exterior styling of DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER was entrusted to Benetti FB Line’s brilliant Stefano Natucci, who imbued the vessel with the instantly recognizable modern classicism that is a trademark of Benetti motor yachts. Innovative features of this quad-deck design include a VIP master stateroom and an Owners’ master stateroom. The unusual fly bridge, located above the sun deck, creates a spectacular panoramic private Owner’s deck that can accommodate helicopter landings and takeoffs, and can only be reached via controlled access from the main staircase and the central elevator.

The interior design and decoration of DIAMONDS

Designer Evan Marshall

ARE FOREVER are the work of the extraordinarily talented Evan K. Marshall of Usonia V, responsible for the interiors of previous Staluppi superyachts including THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH. Marshall designed sumptuous interiors, including all loose furniture, for comfort and visual impact. Furnishings throughout that epitomize luxury and refinement are embedded with thousands of Swarovski crystals that successfully mimic glittering, prismatic diamonds.

Shimmering foyers on each deck house the central spiral staircase that winds around the cylindrical glass elevator. Each foyer sparkles with reflective glass, thematic works of art, striking combinations of marble and onyx floor inlays, and burl wall panels framed by gold and silver leaf inlays.

The main deck layout includes living and dining areas and the VIP apartment. On this and all deck levels, social spaces incorporate elegant pieces of loose furniture and commissioned works of art with design motifs inspired by the ship’s name. The furniture appears to be freestanding, supported only by slender legs embedded with delicate Swarovski crystals set in polished chrome and gold-plate. The VIP master suite features a split-level layout with large panoramic forward facing windows, his and hers walk-in dressing rooms, an exercise room with adjoining sauna and a beauty salon with massage table. These spaces are self contained and can be separated from the stateroom for use by other guests.

The lower deck layout includes one twin stateroom and three king-size staterooms, two of which have walk-in wardrobes. The materials for the staterooms include elegant Madrona burl woods, gold and silver leaf inlays, rare marbles and onyx, and custom colored and embossed leathers. Notable features include lavish ensuite facilities, commissioned works of art representing Neoclassical, Art Deco and Art Nouveau periods, faux stingray skin walls and trim, and silent air conditioning cleverly ventilated through crown molding.

On the upper deck of DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER is the spectacular sky lounge, featuring a unique automated indoor-outdoor dining area. With the flick of a switch electric doors convert the indoor space by opening the area to the aft cockpit, instantly creating an outdoor dining area. The full beam living area boasts a welcoming low bar, plush seating arrangement, a grand piano, game table and four televisions, (we are told Staluppi is a serious Nascar fan) that are concealed by original paintings embedded with Swarovski crystals. In each of the niched corners are four original sculptures inspired by the famous Quattro Fontane in Rome, that reveal John Staluppi’s passion for the sculptures of the artist Erté, renowned as a great master of Art Nouveau and Art Déco. They are reputed to be a very limited edition from the artist’s America Series quartet entitled “Liberty”, “Fearless and Free”, “Peace” and “Justice”, and produced using a bronze alloy casting technique.

DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER is superb luxury yacht that meets the most demanding charter requirements; palatial amounts of space, the very best materials and technology, the highest levels of service, and the utmost privacy and security. She will be available for charter through the Mediterranean this spring.

Sunreef Experts On Board MI SUENO: 190′ Trinity Luxury Charter Yacht Is Proof That Dreams Do Come True

Claire, the poised and charming Second Stewardess, recently escorted Sunreef Yachts Charter experts on a tour of elegant superyacht MI SUENO, a magnificent 190’ Trinity that launched in 2010. Claire, was so very gracious as to carry my purse for me, which I generally stash in a corner, in

Claire, up top with bag still in tow

order to be free to take photographs. It is an example of the flawless level of service to be found on board MI SUENO by her highly professional, dedicated and endearing crew.

The entrance through the foyer from the main aft deck is flanked by very large capacity, very well stocked, temperature controlled wine refrigerators. Row upon row of wines and champagnes stored here include the MI SUENO label of red and white wines from the namesake vineyard in Napa Valley, California. The inspirational rags to riches story of the Owner gives clarity to a double entendre, his personal dream serves as a true testament to the American dream.

Alice in Wonderland Head

MI SUENO features styling and engineering by the Trinity team and yacht designer Patrick Knowles has applied his extraordinary visual ability to interiors. His soothing and contemporary color palette pivots around tones of earth and sea. The furniture arrangement in the main salon creates a congenial area conducive to conversation. The sophisticated elegance of the formal dining room is enhanced by the original work of modern art that spans one wall. This undulating painting, along with panoramic views on port and starboard sides, intensifies the sensation of being afloat.

We continue forward toward the master compartment, pausing to admire the day head Claire fondly calls the “Alice in Wonderland” bathroom. The master suite includes a full size, walk-in wardrobe and, in a somewhat unusual layout, separate his and hers facilities on opposite sides of the hall. Hers includes a spacious Jacuzzi tub with a view.

The living space is arranged behind and below the forward facing bed. A plush sofa to starboard is positioned for reclining opposite a flat screen, pop up TV and to port is a fridge with a mini bar. This self contained compartment is a privacy option that makes MI SUENO ideal for romantic charters. Claire described laying rose petals across the bed and all the way down the corridor to the delight of a couple that chartered for an amorous weekend.

Guests on board MI SUENO are accommodated in four luxurious king bed suites including a palatial VIP. There are also one queen and one twin with Pullman cleverly concealed behind artwork, which is the best option for children that always dislike sharing a bed with their siblings.

The skylounge bar is covered in striking variegated tiger marble that receives many

compliments. These rich, warm tones of brown and gold are integrated throughout the salon furnishings. The protected aft deck is where guests prefer to dine, it is fully air conditioned and features a flip down television that rotates 360 degrees. Today guests are treated to a jazz duo and an irresistable array of finger foods that include lobster mango salad and Kobe beef sliders. High up on the spectacular sundeck guests can enjoy a variety of activities including the practice launch of biodegradable golf balls from a patch of astro turf into the sea. This deck level is also the stage for “tiki parties” that include water balloon fights in which everyone dons pirate costumes and the crew of 14 challenges the guests to battle. The Galápagos albatrosses and marine iguana are just two of the species considered endemic to this island. In addition to unique wildlife, located on a cliff is the amazing blowhole named  El Soplador, cpabale of shooting water 20 to 25 feet high, depending on the intensity of the waves.Garner Bay features a wide open beach located on the north coast of Española Island, home to a large colony of sea lions and a great photo opportunity to catch these endearing animals at play.

DAY 3: Santa Fe and South Plaza Island

Also called Barrington Island, is located in the central part of the Galápagos archipelago. The ascending trail takes visitors to the peak of a cliff where the Santa Fe species of land iguana can be seen. After a long hike, there is nothing better than a swim in the calm waters of the bay or snorkeling in the company of sea lions at the base of the rocks. South Plaza Island is off the east end of Santa Cruz Island. Here about 1,000 sea lions and land iguanas are everywhere. South Plaza Island features a breathtaking perimeter trail through that is easy to follow.

DAY 4: North Seymour, Bartolome Island, Pinnacle Rock

Located north of Baltra is a two-mile trail through low level bush that hosts the largest nesting colony of Great Frigate birds in Galápagos. Blue footed boobies nest along the trail and land iguanas can be viewed in their natural environment. This is also an excellent spot for snorkeling.

Probably the most emblematic visiting sites in The Galápagos are Bartolome Island  and Pinnacle Rock due to the dazzling natural beauty and spectacular landscape. Majestic sea turtles and Galápagos penguins favor this location as a nesting site. Visitors can climb all the way to the highest point on the island by means of a wooden stairway that culminates in a breathtaking view. Here too, snorkeling in the bay is an awesome experience.

DAY 5: Punta Espinoza and Urbina Bay

On the northeastern tip of Fernandina Island a narrow ledge of lava and sand dramatically stretches from the base of the volcano into the sea. Punta Espinoza is famous for its large colonies of marine iguanas. The teaming shoreline is also home to hawks, Galápagos snakes, and many other species. For botany enthusiasts, this is an ideal place to observe the lava cactus (Brachycerus nesioticus) overtaking the lava rocks.

DAY 6: Elizabeth Bay and Punta Moreno

Located on Isabela Island`s west shore, the marine life found here is extremely interesting. The site is considered one of the best places to observe Galapagos penguins perched on rocky coastal formations. A small mangrove-lined canal emerges into a hidden cove where sea turtles, rays, sea lions, and small sharks are abundant. Punta Moreno is located on the sensational north coast of Isabela Island with a panoramic view of three volcanoes, Sierra Negra and Cerro Azul on Isabela Island and La Cumbre on Fernandina Island is truly spectacular. There are many species that use the lagoons as a nursery site that often makes viewing especially charming.

DAY 7: Post Office Bay, Cormorant Point & Devils Crown

This historic site recalls the days of the buccaneers, whalers, and the first human settlement in the Galápagos.  Legend has it that in the 18th century a whaling boat captain placed a barrel for mail drop off and and delivery.  Spelunkers will be interested in the cave reached via a lava tunnel.  Cormorant Point is located on the north Coast of Floreana Island. A trail leads up to a viewing site overlooking a lagoon that is home to a large colony of flamingos. Continue back down along the path to a white sand beach that is a nesting area for sea turtles and attracts many rays and sea turtles visible just offshore. Devils Crown is renowned for the plentiful varieties of marine life. Located off the coast of Floreana Island, this hollow crater offers amazing snorkeling around and inside the inner part of the crater.

DAY 8: Santa Cruz Highlands

The final day guests must bid farewell to new friends, their splendid yacht and fantastic crew. For those guests who have extended their charter vacation with a land segment, the 40 minute drive to the highlands of Santa Cruz from Puerto Ayora offers an opportunity to view astonishing transitions in vegetation according to altitude. Our Charter Experts Onboard 141′ Italyachts MAKIRA: Perfect Island Cruising with Top Speed and Shallow Draft

Italyachts 141′ MAKIRA, with a draft of less than 5 feet, is the perfect luxury charter yacht for exploring the shallow waters of islands such as Makira in the Solomon Island chain. At a cruising speed of 30 knots, the yacht flies over the waves, like the Makira Thrush, Makira Leaf Warbler and Makira Moorhen. Luxury yacht MAKIRA is sleek, fast, sophisticated, fun and in many ways incomparable.

Our Charter experts had the opportunity to tour MAKIRA , speak with the crew and sample the chef’s gourmet finger foods while the yacht was on display at the Miami Yacht and Brokerage Show. We began our visit on the aft deck, ideally designed for  the entire charter party to relax, enjoy the view and dine al fresco.

French Chef Willy Pastel excels at preparing sophisticated gourmet meals that range from the exotic to the traditional. His background at hotels such as the Plaza Athénée in Paris, and on charter yachts worldwide, has provided him the opportunity to discover and master many cuisines including: French, Italian, Asian, Russian and Creole.

Chef Willy

The formal dining room forward of the main salon has doorways both port and starboard leading to the helm that can be closed to create a more private space. When these doors are open, along with a central window, guests have a forward facing view standing anywhere in the salon. This architectural innovation serves to augment the sense of space and visually integrate the main deck.

The stairway enclosure (starboard) is used as additional counter space and bisects the salon and dining area to subtly define the spaces. Below, the design theme is repeated with contrasting rich dark woods, white carpeting and light fabrics. The palette suggests the Asian concept of yin and yang to impart a feeling of overall balance on board.

Luxury superyacht MAKIRA features an open and spacious  master stateroom, a very sizable VIP, a double and a twin stateroom, which together provide accommodation for up to nine guests.

MAKIRA is currently available in the Bahamas based in Nassau. MAKIRA will be in the Western Mediterranean in time for the Cannes Film Festival and Monaco Grand Prix and may consider charters in Croatia from June.

Virgin Islands Adventure: Spending 7 Nights Aboard a Private Luxury Yacht Charter

The Virgin Islands, named by Christopher Columbus for the legend of St. Ursula and her 11,000 virgins, are a spectacularly beautiful group of islands. Breathtaking scenery, ideal climate and comfortable cruising conditions equal paradise for Luxury Crewed Yacht Charter clients who have the opportunity to explore living reefs, white sand beaches and charming towns, all within close proximity to one another. Presented here is a sample seven night itinerary designed with something for everyone.

Day 1: St. Thomas to St. John

Board your luxury charter yacht in St. Thomas, USVI and enjoy a delightful lunch on the aft deck and a leisurely sail to Francis Bay on St. John. It is nearly always possible to find a lovely secluded spot on this vast, white sand beach. Launch the yacht toys and spend the afternoon playing and swimming in crystal clear, turquoise waters. Snorkelers head for the deeper waters just beyond the shallow fringing reef along Francis Bay’s rocky north shore to view an amazing and rich variety of marine life. Stroll along beach or follow the Francis Bay Trail that runs along the salt pond behind the beach and is an excellent place for bird watching, especially early in the morning. Return to the the yacht to enjoy signature sunset cocktails followed by a delicious dinner under the stars.

Day 2: St. John to Jost Van Dyke

Leinster Bay, St John, offers a morning of spectacular snorkeling or hiking. Most agree that Waterlemon Cay, just offshore from the east end of Leinster Bay, is the best snorkeling on St. John. Explorers and hiking enthusiasts can walk along the many island trails where visitors are likely to spot feral donkeys and small herds of goats that roam freely through the bush. History buffs should take the Brown Bay Trail that leads to some of the most extensive ruins on the island of St. John.

In the afternoon set sail for the Jost Van Dyke, first stop in the British Virgin Islands. Foxy’s is one of the world famous beach bars where visitors can divulge in authentic Calypso island revelry. Join a “jump up” party and mix with visitors and locals, sample island cuisine, microbrews, and potent tropical rum drinks.

Day 3: Jost Van Dyke to Tortola

Sail around Sandy Cay, Sandy Spit and Green Cay for a morning of exploring, beach combing and spectacular snorkeling in the beautiful British Virgin Islands. Sandy Spit is a picture perfect “deserted island” and the marine life surrounding the island is breathtaking. Next cruise to Cane Garden Bay, Tortola, a magnificent stretch of beach with charming local bars, a couple of excellent restaurants and a small rum factory.
Overnight in Cane Garden Bay or head to West End, Tortola and a shore excursion to Pusser’s Landing for a “Painkiller” and some island shopping.

Day 4: Tortola to Norman Island

The Bight at Norman Island is renowned for legends of hidden pirate treasure yet to be found. Norman Island, rumored to be the basis for the Robert Louis Stevenson novel, Treasure Island, is a popular snorkeling destination where deep, dark caves provide a magical experience. The island is privately owned and the only permanent inhabitants are wild goats. However, an old barge named the “Willie T” operates as a risque bar and restaurant known for seriously wild partying, mostly after dark.

Day 5: Norman Island to Virgin Gorda

Virgin Gorda is world famous for its geologically mysterious Baths, where huge boulders descend into pools and grottoes that are fascinating for visitors of all ages to explore. Board your yacht for lunch and a picturesque cruise to North Sound, Virgin Gorda, to visit the Bitter End Yacht Club, a premiere luxury water sports resort with a variety of activities available including kitesurfing, boardsailing, diving and hiking. The Bitter End Spa is rated “A World’s Best” by Conde Nast Traveler.

Day 6: Virgin Gorda to Peter Island

Enjoy a morning swim then cruise to a serene beach on Deadman’s Bay and a colorful coral reef at Great Harbor. Spend the afternoon and/or evening at Peter Island Marina, Resort and Spa for an upscale island experience. This is a beautiful setting in which to meet fellow yachtsmen and elite travelers, enjoy five star formal dining and world class facilities.

Day 7: Peter Island to St. John

Launch the yacht’s water toys and have some water sports fun either above or below the water line. Divers will thrill to the 1867 wreck of the British mail steamer R.M.S. Rhone, laying on the ocean floor encrusted in coral. In the afternoon, sail to Cruz Bay, the main town on St John, to clear U.S. Customs. For guests who enjoy shopping and shore excursions, this charming city features island architecture, quaint boutiques and restaurants and historical points of interest. Guests who prefer the surf, head to nearby Christmas Cove on Great St James Island for afternoon snorkeling and other watersports fun. The final dinner on the aft deck of the yacht, bathed in the balmy Caribbean breeze, is a moment to savor.

Day 8: St. John to St. Thomas

Enjoy an excellent breakfast on deck and go for a final swim before setting sail for St. Thomas. Say a fond farewell to the crew as the dream of returning to the spectacular Virgin Islands begins to take shape. Guests that have an extended stay of a day or two will find St. Thomas an enchanting island with excellent attractions, restaurants and duty free shopping.

Our Charter Experts On Board Luxury Charter Superyacht TOP FIVE: An Exquisite Christensen 157 with a Superb Crew

Our charter experts were invited to go aboard and experience the magnificent luxury charter yacht TOP FIVE, a 157′ Christensen available for charter in the Caribbean and the Bahamas. We were extremely impressed with everything about TOP FIVE, from her meticulous craftsmanship to her delightful crew. This is a superyacht with a stately, understated elegance that will enchant her charter guests while easily meeting all of the requirements of a discriminating clientele.

TOP FIVE (ex: Nice ‘N Easy, Liquidity) was built in 2005 by US builder Christensen Shipyards and was originally designed for the shipyard owner himself. Thus, although Christensen is renowned for launching magnificent yachts, TOP FIVE has design elements that launch her cleanly over the top.

Exterior design and naval architecture by the Christensen in-house team endowed TOP FIVE with the powerful and imposing profile that distinguishes the brand in any port of call. Recently the yacht has had an extensive soft goods refit to update interiors that are sophisticated, soothing and subtle. The broad appeal of understated elegance is perfectly suited to the diversity of charter clientele. Regardless of whether charter guests prefer Mozart or Madonna, they will feel comfortable and at home aboard TOP FIVE.

Superb joinery and intricate stonework are distinguishing features of luxury yacht TOP FIVE. Meticulous attention to detail is evident in the raised-panel joinery of American walnut with high gloss finish and perfectly matched wood panels and veneers. Deep earthen tones create a stunning balance against creamy white carpeting with a delicately undulating pattern. Exotic stone materials, including malachite and Juparana persa granite, are beautifully inlaid throughout the foyers, bathrooms and hallways. Contemporary furnishings in a light color palette derive sophistication from a simplicity of form.

Luxury yacht TOP FIVE accommodates 12 guests in six staterooms. The full beam master compartment is located on the main deck and includes stunning his and her facilities with Jacuzzi tub and large shower. A walk-in cedar closet provides ample storage for longer charters. At the entrance, a private study with comfortable sofa and desk allow guests to stay in touch with the office if necessary. On the lower level amidships
is the full beam VIP king suite that has an exquisite bathroom with Jacuzzi and separate shower. The 50 inch TV opposite the bed is cleverly concealed behind a pleasant painting. Also on this level are two queen guest staterooms and two guest staterooms each with double, twin and Pullman beds.

We met Chef Bradley David in his spotless galley on our visit. He surprised us with servings of delicately flavored tomato gazpacho, and what he described as “a sandwich”, (far to common a description of this remarkable crab delicacy), and a signature chocolate mousse creation. He is charming, talented, and a very experienced yacht chef quite capable of pleasing any palate. He said his favorite recipes to prepare are new ones, both his own creative dishes as well as those of other chefs.

Captain Johannes, despite expecting a new group of charter guests within the hour, graciously spent quite a bit of time chatting with us about TOP FIVE and some of his favorite Caribbean itineraries. Not only is he extremely knowledgable about the region, he is also enthusiastic about creating custom itineraries suited to repeat charter clients who are seeking alternative Caribbean ports of call. The Chief Stew and Second Stew were continually smiling, gracious and extremely attentive. This highly professional crew works together harmoniously and seems flawlessly adept at pleasing charter clients.

It was a great pleasure to be on board luxury superyacht TOP FIVE, and to have the opportunity to experience firsthand the elegant interiors, expansive deck spaces and first rate crew. TOP FIVE will undoubtedly be an exceedingly popular charter yacht in the Caribbean and the Bahamas this season.

Please contact Sunreef Yachts Charter for detailed information, charter rates and availability for TOP FIVE, or for comprehensive information about Luxury Yacht Charter and Destinations worldwide.
